Sailing is a sport that can and should be enjoyed by people of all ages! At SingaporeSailing, we have adults sailing courses as well where you will get to learn how to sail with either Byte, Pacer, or a Laser! You can experience this through our Learn to Sail (adults) programme!

Course Syllabus


  • Key parts and functions of a sailboat
  • Basic safety & boat orientation
  • Rigging & de-rigging
  • Basic knots & applications
  • Launching & Recovery
  • Capsize drill – demonstration
  • Swimming test


  • Sailing across the wind & tacking – boat balance, centreboard position, sail trimming, steering
  • Pointing and bearing away
  • Tacking
  • Launching & Recovery – onshore and offshore
  • Basic Heave-to
  • Towing & Rescue


  • Practice sailing across the wind and gybing
  • Basic sailing upwind technique & tacking – boat balance, sail
  • trimming, centreboard position, holding a closehauled course
  • Sailing downwind & gybing

MODULE FOUR (Open Sea Phase)

  • Sailing Upwind & Tacking
  • Sailing downwind & gybing
  • Practice heave-to
  • Rules of the Road


  • Sailing a triangular course
  • Man-overboard drill
  • Coming alongside


  • Revise points of sailing
  • Practice: Man-overboard & Coming alongside
  • Start racing (at the sole discretion of the instructor)

MODULE SEVEN (Preparation for SSF Level One Proficiency Test)

  • Meteorology – Winds, Tides & Currents
  • Revise basic knots & introduce sheet bend & clove-hitch
  • Practical Skills

MODULE EIGHT – Level One Proficiency Test (Theory & Practical)

  • 30-minute theory test paper on boat parts, sailing terminology, weather & tide, basic rules, safety at sea, etc.
  • Practical Test
At the end of this course, you will...
  • Be able to rig a dinghy on land & name the parts of the boat and their functions
  • Be able to launch and return to shore in a seaman-like manner
  • Be able to sail one class of dinghy on all points of sail in wind conditions of up to 10 knots
  • Be able to perform heave-to
  • Be able to upright a capsized dinghy
  • Know the requirements of personal & boat safety
  • Be able to demonstrate the use of these knots: a figure of 8, reef, bowline, sheet bend, clove hitch, round turn and 2 half hitches.
