CODE OF PRACTICE FOR COACHING

Introduction

Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF) is committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and effective environment for the development of sailing in Singapore. Coaches play an essential role in shaping the development, well-being, and sporting values of sailors. To maintain the highest standards of coaching, coaches shall adhere to the accreditation and certification guidelines set forth by SSF. The Code of Practice for Coaching outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and obligations for coaches, ensuring that both coaches and sailors are aligned with the goals of professional development, safety, and fair play.

1. Accreditation and Certification

  • Mandatory Requirement: All coaches operating with SSF-affiliated clubs, events, and training programmes must possess a valid SG-Coach certification (previously NCAP) and be a member of the National Registry of Coaches (NROC), appropriate to the level they are coaching.

  • Ongoing Professional Development: Coaches must actively participate in continuous professional development to stay updated on best practices, safety protocols, and coaching methodologies. This shall be in line with the requirements to maintain their NROC membership.

2. Ethical and Professional Conduct

  • Integrity: Coaches must act with integrity and fairness in all dealings with sailors, ensuring they uphold the values of sportsmanship, respect, and inclusivity.

  • Safe and Supportive Environment: Coaches are responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for all sailors, placing the safety and well-being of athletes above all else. This shall be in line with the Safe Sport Unified Code.

  • Non-discrimination: Coaches must not engage in discriminatory behaviour based on race, gender, ability, or any other characteristic, ensuring equal opportunities for all sailors.

3. Coaching Without Accreditation

  • Unaccredited Coaching Prohibition: Coaches without valid SG-Coach certifications and NROC memberships are prohibited from offering coaching services at SSF events, clubs, or programmes.

    • SSF acknowledges that there may be exceptional cases where individuals without full certification may be required to provide coaching services. Exemptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Requests for exemptions must be submitted via email to SSF for review.

  • Disciplinary Actions: Any coach found to be operating without valid accreditation may face the following consequences:

    • Immediate suspension from all SSF events, programmes, and competitions.

    • Listing of their non-compliance on the SSF website, visible to clubs, sailors, and parents.

4. Sailor Awareness and Responsibility

  • Choosing Certified Coaches: Sailors and parents are encouraged to select SG-Coach certified coaches to ensure they receive the highest standard of training and support.

  • Reporting Violations: Sailors, parents, or other stakeholders may report any instances of unaccredited coaching to the SSF. SSF will investigate and take appropriate action.

5. SSF Support for Coaches

  • Certification Pathways: SSF offers clear and structured certification pathways for all aspiring and current coaches. SSF is committed to supporting coaches in acquiring the necessary credentials and developing their skills.

  • Recognition and Rewards: Certified coaches will be recognised by the SSF through various platforms, including the SSF website, social media, and events, offering visibility and credibility within the sailing community.

6. Compliance and Enforcement

  • Monitoring: The SSF will regularly monitor coaching activities across clubs and events to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice for Coaching.

  • Penalties for Non-Compliance: Non-compliance with this Code may result in sanctions, including the suspension of coaching privileges, fines, or exclusion from SSF-affiliated programmes and events.

Singapore Sailing Federation is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of coaching across the sport. By adhering to the Code of Practice for Coaches, coaches, sailors, and all stakeholders contribute to the growth of sailing in Singapore in a safe, fair, and professional manner.
